Element begins work with Action Renewables on Northern Ireland microgeneration study
This project will assess the potential for gas network extension and microgeneration technologies to supply heat to areas of Northern Ireland off the gas network. The financial and environmental impacts of alternative approaches will be quantified, including impacts on fuel poverty. The study will provide strategic recommendations to Government in relation to policy on gas network extension, microgeneration and fuel poverty.

National Housing Model scoping study, led by Element Energy, gets underway
The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) is coordinating efforts to develop a comprehensive and authoritative model of the UK housing stock. This will be an important tool for policy makers to assess the impact and effectiveness of options to reduce energy demand of and CO2 emissions from domestic dwellings. Element Energy is leading a team to define the scope of the new National Housing Model and to provide recommendations on model structure and implementation.

New Carbon Capture and Storage study led by Element begins
This study will examine the technical and economic potential for industrial and gas based CCS, areas less well researched than the application of CCS to coal fired power stations. Element Energy is leading a consortium including AMEC and Carbon Counts to undertake this work for the Committee on Climate Change. The outputs of the study will form an important evidence base for assessment of appropriate CCS targets and policy decisions.

DCLG publishes Impact Assessment on changes to the Code for Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes has been developed as the national standard for the design and construction of new homes. Element undertook a study into the costs of building Code homes and developed modelling tools to conduct an impact assessment on proposed changes to the Code for the Department of Communities and Local Government. The IA is available here.
The full cost report, which examines the cost of building to each level of the Code for a range of dwelling and development types, will be published soon.

New recruits start work with Element
Element's growth continued this month with Foaad Tahir and Roberto Zaetta joining the team in the London office. Foaad recently completed his MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development at the University of Cambridge. His particular areas of interest are renewable energy and hybrid transportation. Roberto joined Element following completion of an MSc degree in Sustainable Energy Futures from Imperial College London, having previously completed an MSc degree in Theoretical Physics at the University of Padua (Italy). His particular areas of interest are renewable and low-carbon technologies, from both a technical and policy point of view.
